This hive of wild honeybees was found behind an abandoned house on the New Jersey side of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Also, I found the 1777 and 1792 estate accounts of my 7th and 6th great-grandfathers respectively who kept bees on their farmstead. Colonial uses for bees were numerous: honey was used as a sweetener but also for medicinal purposes; wax was used to make candles; the red stuff you see “dripping” down the siding is called propolis and is an excellent sealant.
